How to identify your sound card in Windows 98

To identify your soundcard you need to go to the Device Manager. You can get there as follows:
1) On the desktop right-click the "My Computer" icon.
2) Then select properties.
3) Now click on the Device Manager tab.

OK, you're there. It should look a bit like this, apart from the colour:

In the Device Manager you can see a list of different types of hardware with + signs next to each.
To open the section for audio. click on the + sign next to the one called "Sound, video and game controllers".
When you do this, it will open up and you will see all the hardware in your computer related to sound, video, and yep, you guessed it - game controllers.

At least one and maybe more of these devices will be related to your sound card. If you're not sure, note down all the items in this list. The list may look like the image below, but there could be any number of devices in the list:
