WinAVI is a great single-click converter

Image
If you want a great single-click converter to turn your AVI's into DVD's, then download and install WinAVI at www.winavi.com It looks like this: 1) The most important pre-conversion test is that the movie plays in Windows Media Player. If it doesn't, you'll need to go and get the necessary codec. (Use GSpot to identify the codec. Once you know what codec you want, the best place to get it is doom9.org ) 2) In the WinAVI settings choose for constant video size (to fit a DVD). 3) Also setting the quality preference to "By speed" instead of "By quality" still produces great results! 4) WinAVI will create AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS directories. You only need the files in VIDEO_TS. Use these files to burn your DVD. (with Nero you just choose DVD Video mode and place all these files in Nero's VIDEO_TS folder)

How To post pics :))

Note to self :) Ok, 2 things must go right to post a pic: 1) The pic must go where you want it to 2) The link to the pic must be correct in your post! So: a) Just entering the path as: pics ...should put it in http://home.wanadoo.nl/gigajosh/pics where you want it. b) But the path the Blogger gives you when you choose to place it inline may be wrong, so check it's also http://home.wanadoo.nl/gigajosh/pics/my_pic.jpg or whatever. NOTE: You can always go to http://www2ftp.de for emergencies! Sweet :)

protowall.sys is not loaded (Installing ProtoWall)

Freaked-out method of installing Protowall on XP 1) Install protowall *without driver* in c:\protowall 2) Go to network props and choose to add a Service 3) LEAVE THE NETWORK PROPS WINDOW FOR CHOOSING A SERVICE OPEN 4) Reinstall Protowall *with Driver* in c:\protowall\ and click ok when install tells you the Network props is open (turn off all Protowall's auto-connect stuff) 5) Rename c:\protowall\xp_driver to c:\protowall\xpdriver 6) Then in the Network Props window (that is still open!) choose Browse. 7) Locate ProtoWall.inf (NOT ProtoWall_mp.inf) and choose this file. 8) Click OK to all the unsigned driver messages (there may be lots, ~7) 9) Start Protowall (shouldn't need to reboot XP, I didn't) 10) Should be sweet!!

taskkill.exe and PsTools

I was looking for a way to kill running tasks from the command line in XP when I came across information about the command line utility taskkill.exe . This does the trick but isn't available in XP Home. It will work with XP Home however. I found an unofficial link to  taskkill.exe here . Alternatively you might want to check out another officially downloadable Microsoft utility called  PsKill . PsKill will do the same job as taskkill.exe. At the following link you'll find a description of PsKill and a download link for the PsTools suite that contains PsKill .  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896683.aspx [ thanks for the tip Anonymous ;-) ] If you're still determined to proceed with  taskkill.exe,  Here is Microsoft's documentation on taskkill.exe  and here are some usage examples from Computerhope .
